A new type of locomotive will be gracing Britain’s railways in 2013 after Direct Rail Services confirmed an order for 15 locos based on Vossloh’s Eurolight design.

The Vossloh Eurolight is currently operating as a prototype in Germany, but the UK variants will be smaller to cater for this country’s narrower loading guage.

The mixed-traffic design, which will be capable of 100 mph, has been developed in conjunction with Beacon Rail Leasing and there is an option for future orders, according to the Railway Gazette.

At 3,750hp the Caterpillar C175 engined locos, rumoured to be taking the Class 68 classification, will be the most powerful in the DRS fleet.
